Paper stressing you out?

Don't worry, we've been there, too.

No idea how to make your papers sound like those in your field?

Struggling with writing advice that supposedly teaches you how to write a paper? ("Write a compelling abstract!" great - wtf does that mean?)

Staring at a blank page with no idea what to put on it? Procrastinating by throwing yourself into experiments?

Secretly worried your prof won't take your seriously again as a student if your draft is bad? (I was...BIG TIME!)

Don't you just wish it was easier?

That someone would hand you a FORMULA for writing a great research paper so you can cross it off the list and move on?

Well, now someone is. Me.

Hi! I'm Kaycie!

My workshops give early-career scientists the exact training they need to write convincing papers.

How do I do it? I was once a student myself (PhD. Chemistry, Caltech), and now teach exactly what I needed when I was in your shoes.

How did I learn? As a professional science editor, I read hundreds and hundreds of papers. Eventually, I learned patterns characterizing well versus poorly written papers.

And where there is a pattern, there is a formula that can be learned!

What is this workshop?

This premium scientific writing workshop will provide scientists with the tools they need to write a functional draft of their manuscript, with the overall goal of getting a better draft on paper in less time and with less wasted mental energy.

Goals:

  1. Understand how to effectively organize a manuscript
  2. Learn directly applicable formulas to simplify writing and save time
  3. Alleviate the stress associated with academic writing
  4. Increase impact by highlighting the importance of your work and writing to the reader

Participants will leave the workshop with:

  1. A solid understanding of the focus and composition of each section of a manuscript
  2. Knowledge of what goes where (how to draft)
  3. Directly applicable formulas for writing key sections (save time drafting)
  4. An ability to spot key mistakes (how to edit)
  5. Direct feedback on in-progress drafts

After the workshop, participants tell me they:

  1. Feel more comfortable writing a manuscript
  2. Save time when they sit down to write
  3. Feel less stressed and save mental energy
  4. Feel more comfortable having permanent access to myself and my editing team for any future questions!

What comes with the course?

Get all course materials as a reference to keep, forever, along with private access to me for future questions.

Each module of the course:

  • Reviews a detailed breakdown of an “ideal” version
  • Learn what information goes where and WHY (so you can replicate this on your own!)
  • See the most common mistakes writers make in that section and how to fix them

• Shows how to apply that information to your own drafts (i.e., learn how to edit your own work)

• Teaches how to write the text of each section

• Provides checklists for how to get “unstuck” when writing

• Includes detailed reference materials containing everything they need to write their draft, including:

- Detailed outlines for each section

- A Word template for preparing your own papers

- Dos and Don’ts

- Common words limits

- Verb tenses to use

- And more!

Don't take my word for it. Test it yourself.

Some materials from the course are available for free on YouTube.

For instance, this video on crafting an ideal discussion of a scientific research paper is adapted from the workshop.

Any writer can benefit from this material, and having the material BEFORE you sit down to write your next paper can save you time and energy!

If you have a draft, definitely bring it for real-time feedback from other attendees and myself, though if not, no worries - you can join another group and work towards their draft or work on a previously published paper from your lab or field.

You may have already written tons of papers, but do you feel completely comfortable and confident when you sit down to write a new one?

Do you find yourself procrastinating and doing anything BUT writing? Are you sure you are using your time in the most efficient fashion?

If you’ve never before taken a course in manuscript writing, it is likely that many parts of the writing and editing process are taking you longer than they should - save yourself time in the future, and learn these formulas for writing your next paper!

Discuss the benefits of taking a course on manuscript writing with your professor or send him to this page: https://courses.butlerscicomm.com/19867.

In addition to the benefits to you and your future career, having better first drafts of manuscripts will also save your professor hours of time! The time and energy it will take your PI to correct your raw draft of a paper is worth so much more than the cost of one workshop on manuscript writing.

In fact, YOUR time savings alone would be well worth your professor’s time – if you are at your computer stressing over your paper, you are not working in the lab, either!

If that is the case, then you don’t have the time to NOT take this course.

The entire workshop will be completed in 8 hours over 2 days, and will give you exact formulas you need to write each section, show you how to identify and fix the most common mistakes, provide all of the details you need to write each section, and give you tips for what to do when you are stuck!

During the workshop, you can also get real-time feedback on any parts of your draft that are currently in progress - saving you valuable time at the editing stage!

Probably not!

Most students enroll through their university of lab, either using a university credit card or are reimbursed from the lab. Talk to your professor and lab manager about your options for having work-related training paid for or reimbursed.

Then check back soon, as I add new dates and times as workshops fill.
